The Campaign
The Southern African Regional Research Initiative (SAFARI 2000) was an international project that aimed to understand land and atmosphere interactions and processes. SAFARI 2000 operated from 1999 to 2001 during the wet and dry seasons of Southern Africa. Several aircraft, including NASA’s ER-2, the University of Washington’s CV-580, and the South African Weather Service’s Aerocommander, were used to collect in situ aerosol data from different levels of the atmosphere. Besides aircraft data, in situ data were also gathered at various field sites across the southern part of the African continent. SAFARI 2000 was mainly funded by NASA’s EOS, Land Cover and Land Use Change, and Terrestrial Ecology programs.
